From Crabtree Meadow (PCT MILE 766.3), head to the Crabtree Ranger Station (1.3 miles northeast of Crabtree Meadow). Suggest camping there rather than Guitar Lake, which is often very cold & damp. When returning to the PCT, you don't have to back-track to Crabtree Meadow. Just stay on the JMT heading west and pick up the PCT again in about a mile.

KEARSARGE PASS: PCT MILE 788.9
Take the Kearsarge Pass Trail (PCT MILE 788.9) to Onion Valley. It is 7.5 miles to the trail head at Onion Valley. Then Hitch 13 miles to Independence. Easy to get a ride on week ends; harder on weekdays.

Better re-supply destinations are Lone Pine or Bishop.
Independence has the valley market Chevron. Eastern Sierra Transit bus operates weekdays for service between Independence and Bishop (estransit.com).

The Stratford Inn (541-488-2151) is close to the Safeway. Most of the lodging in Ashland is expensive. There is a taxi service that costs $14 for a ride back to Callihan's. Phone: 541-488-1998.

Getting there:
At Pengra pass (mile 1903.7), go down to the jeep road, TURN RIGHT, and follow the jeep road. Cross the railroad tracks, then walk the jeep road to the right down to the highway. TURN RIGHT on the highway and walk .5 miles When you see a BLM campground on the left, cross the bridge & you'll see the Shelter Cove sign on the left.

Shelter Cove Resort has a small store but it is very expensive and cannot be used for resupply.

There is lodging here, but it is expensive. Might need to stop to recharge electronics.

When returning to the PCT, there is a connecting trail which leaves the jeep road above the rail road tracks.
